The iPad race has begun

January 28th, 2010

Shortly after Apple announced that its new handheld computer would be called iPad, surfers and domainers quickly wanted to check out if the company had secured all relevant domain names.

The answer was a big “No”. According to TechCrunch, Apple does not own a single iPad domain. Neither as top level domain such as iPad.com or as country code domain.

Interestingly, right now at Sedo the domain iPad.de is on auction. With over two days left, the bidding is at 4,600 euros (about $6,500). This auction was started several days before Apple announced the name, so I wonder if the present owner speculated about iPad being the name, or if it is a pure coincedent.

In any case, I am sure the final price will be even higher than now as many of the latest bids were placed last night after Apple’s announcement.
